Iced Hojicha Latte

Iced Hojicha Latte

Mella Putri Susantika

The smooth, smoky flavor of Hojicha makes for a unique iced latte that’s both cozy and refreshing. It’s lower in caffeine than matcha, so it’s perfect for an afternoon pick-me-up without overloading on caffeine. This easy-to-make iced hojicha latte will cool you down while satisfying your taste buds!

Ingredients:

  • 3 grams Hojicha powder
  • 40 ml hot water (about 85°C, just below boiling)
  • 120 ml milk or oat milk (for a vegan option)
  • 1-2 teaspoons honey, maple syrup, or sweetener of choice (optional)
  • Ice cubes

Directions:

Prepare the Hojicha:
  • Sift the hojicha powder into a small bowl to prevent clumping.
  • Add 40 ml of hot water (not boiling—around 85°C) to the powder and whisk until smooth and frothy. If you're using hojicha tea bags, brew the tea as you would normally, steeping for 3-5 minutes, then discard the tea bag.
Sweeten (Optional):
  • Stir in 1-2 teaspoons of honey or sweetener of choice to taste while the hojicha is still warm. The warm tea helps the sweetener dissolve more easily.
Assemble the Drink:
  • Fill a tall glass with ice cubes.
  • Add the milk (or oat milk)
  • Pour the prepared hojicha on top of the milk.

Stir everything together for a deliciously creamy, toasted hojicha latte, or leave it layered for a striking presentation.

Pro Tips:

  • Hojicha powder vs. tea bags: If you want a more authentic hojicha latte experience, go for hojicha powder, which gives a richer flavor. Tea bags are more convenient but can sometimes result in a milder taste.
  • Sweetener: Because hojicha has a naturally sweet, toasty flavor, you may not need much sweetener. Start small and adjust to taste.
  • Non-dairy milk: Oat milk works wonderfully in hojicha lattes for its creamy texture, but almond, coconut, or soy milk are great alternatives too.

This Iced Hojicha Latte is perfect for anyone craving a warm, toasty, and lightly sweetened drink that’s also refreshing. It's an underrated gem that’s just as satisfying as a matcha latte—if not more! 🍵❄️
